Needs to be Laminated (Pricey!)Reviewed by Jenne Alderks, 2010-01-08
This has been a good set to use with my son's preschool coop. However, it needs to be laminated to be durable. I put the calendar on a foam core backing and even that is showing signs of "love." If I were to look for a large scale, educational calendar again. I wouldn't buy this one again. I would pay for the more expensive canvas wall calendars used by many preschools. This one would be great for a bulletin board, but its not very good for encouraging child to manipulate the pieces.
Homeschooling NecessityReviewed by S. Krohn, 2009-11-14
I bought this set for my homeschooling kindergardener. I looked at many, many sets and finally settled on this one, and am quite glad that I did. We start school every day with the Pledge and weather observations. We then come inside to record our weather observations (great b/c it gets him to observe graphing and trends already), and filling in the calender. I like that we can put the numbers up one day at a time to reinforce number recognition, months of the year, days of the week and so forth. In my opinion, this set is just right for a kindergardener, covering the basics that need to be addressed. The durability is ok, but for the cost, I won't mind if I have to buy a new calender set in 2-3 years. If I was really concerned about it I would have laminated the set and then put velcro on the numbers and calender. Oh, and most importantly, my son loves recording the weather and updating the calender every day! He is beginning to understand the concepts of days/weeks/months/years.
Great Calendar for homeschool or early preschool programReviewed by Jess, 2009-02-25
I purchased this product to use with my k and 2nd grader. They both
enjoy it as visual tool for learning days, weeks, months, seasons
and basic weather types.
All the significant holidays are included (including Kwanzaa,
election day, and season beginnings). There are several Birthday,
No School, Special Days and Field Trip triangles, each with a
cartoon type drawing appropriate for the holiday or event. These
triangles may be attached to the date of the specific holiday by
slipping them into the provided slots on each square. I cannot rate
the ease of use of the slots because I chose to have the calendar
laminated (It comes with a light coating, but I knew it would get a
lot of use and it wasn't expense to have done; whole set for under
$6) and used velcro to adhere the dates and double stick tape for
the holidays. The months are color-coded by seasons which
correspond to the seasons for the season/weather wheel chart.
My kids enjoy using the wheel to show the daily change in weather,
then record the data on the Weather graph. I also like the day of
the week chart which provides spaces for yesterday and tomorrow. It
gives my students additional practice remembering the order of
days. In addition I have used the calendar to reinforce counting (k
student will put up the dates in numerical order) and to keep
visual track of special events (field trips, relatives visiting,
etc).
The only problem I might have with the product would be the small
arrows used on the weather wheel. If I had not had it laminated
they might have broken after repeated use.
Overall, wonderful product!
